Gratefulness is a warm and heartfelt appreciation of kindness received.  Very often, what we receive freely can easily lose its value and be taken for granted. That said, however, not everyone who displays gratitude does so with sincerity. Some of our actions are not altruistic, done solely for the benefit of boosting our self-worth and shaping our perception in the eyes of the others.

Humility in the face of ingratitude is a sign of person’s spiritual development. If you believe that everyone you help owes you a debt of gratitude, then you will never feel at ease with yourself. It would mean that your actions never originated from your free, voluntary will in the purest sense of the phrase.

Sometimes the thing you get in return for all your help isn’t necessarily the most important. What’s truly significant is the person that it made you become.
